MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Security forces have shot dead a man after he refused to stop at a checkpoint in Mazar-I-Sharif, the capital of northern Balkh, province, an official said on Saturday.
Balkh Police spokesman Mohammad Asif Waziri said Haji Esmtaullah was shot dead by intelligence personnel when he refused to stop at a checkpoint.
First, the security forces fired in the air to stop him but he refused, the official said. Then they fired at him. As a result, the man was injured and later he succumbed to his wounds.
Faizullah, an intelligence operative, was arrested in connection with the killing of Estmatullah. The detainee is under investigation.
Abdul Rauf, the victim’s uncle, said Esmatullah was a shopkeeper and that he was innocent. He was killed in the 6th police district of Mazar-i-Sharif.
