Khairkhwa: Basic problems of public universities to be solved next year

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Deputy Minister of Higher Education on Saturday said there were some major problems in all public universities in the country and efforts were being made to address them.

Lutfullah Khairkhwa, deputy minister of higher education, made the remarks at a meeting at Paktia University, to evaluate the university and its future plans.

“There are 39 government universities and institutions across the country, some of which we have visited and we identified universities that still have major problems which could not be addressed in the past,” Khairkhwa said.

He said that many universities lacked well-equipped laboratories, libraries, buildings, power systems and were plagued with countless other technical problems.

He said  they had visited a number of universities to address these issues and had made plans to address the above shortcomings.

Khairkhwa said that next year they wanted to work for solution and development of basic problems of all the universities in the country.

The deputy minister for higher education said he had worked on a plan that would meet all needs of each faculty and would not require the help of other agencies.

But he did not elaborate on the plan.

He said that master’s and doctoral programs in foreign countries would continue as usual and many countries had promised to help in this regard.

Khairkhwa also spoke about Paktia University, saying it was new and some work had been done, but the institute required more work.

Obaidullah Akhundzada, aktia University chancellor, said that classes at Paktia University had started on time and no lecturer had gone abroad.

He said some faculties of Paktia University lacked buildings, libraries, laboratories and other necessary facilities.

It is worth mentioning that Paktia University has nine faculties and around 7,000 students are studying in it, out of which 500 are girls.
