NEILI (Pajhwok): Officials in central Daikundi province say that 70 percent of humanitarian aid in the province would be distributed to people under the Work for Food program.
Daikundi governor Aminullah Obaid in a statement said that the decision to distribute food for work was made at the governor’s house monthly meeting with some organizations and private sector on Wednesday.
Obaid praised the efforts of aid organizations to provide timely assistance to people and asked them to increase aid to needy families in the province which is affected by drought this year.
In the future, aid organizations will distribute about 70 percent of the humanitarian aid to people in exchange for work, and the rest will be considered for the homeless and poor families, he said.
He said that the aim of distribution of aid based on work was to prevent corruption and support people suffering from poverty.
Meanwhile, QariHamdullahSajid, economy director of Daikundi, told Pajhwok Afghan News that there are 28 non-governmental organizations in the province, usually active in public health area, natural disasters, migrants, education and some other areas.
He said that aid packages from relief organizations are usually in the form of cash, food and non-food items.
Since the incumbent government’s coming to power, about 90,000 people in the province have received assistance through NGOs and the government, he added.
Residents of Pato, Gizab and Kajran districts of Daikundi province are mostly affected by poverty and conflicts of the past.
Sajid said that over 95 percent of people in Daikundi lived below the poverty line and the aid they received was not enough to resolve their economic problems.
