SHIBRGHAN (Pajhwok): Agriculture officials of northern Jawzjan province on Thursday said work to rehabilitate the only recreational park in Shiberghan, the provincial capital, was launched today.

Qari Abdullah Ansar, provincial agriculture director, told Pajhwok Afghan News, “The park was partially damaged due to the lack of attention of the officials of the previous government. We decided to rehabilitate it by recruiting workers.”

He said that at least 170 people were working in the rehabilitation process of the park to reconstruct the park’s roads and recreational areas.

“As the park is built on 200 acres of land, it is not possible to make significant changes to it in a year and the rehabilitation program would continue for years. We started planting trees since March and workers currently work in the surrounding areas of the park,” he said.

The trees planted in the park were bought from local farmers, he said, adding that the program was part of the measures being taken by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL), which will continue for some time.

Ansar said that the construction of the surrounding wall of the park has been completed and it was planned to concrete sidewalks inside the park next year.

Farmers who work in the park say that besides rehabilitating greenery in the area, they also earn some money from their work.

Asadullah, one of the farmers working in the park said, “When I heard that workers are being hired to rehabilitate the park, I came here and I have been working for 20 days now.”

He said that there was only one recreational park in Shiberghan city where they work now.

He said that March, April and May were special season of people’s gathering in the park.

Asadullah said that he was paid 300 afghanis a day and that he was happy as a citizen who would both received money and contributed to the rehabilitation of the park.

“We are a family of eight members, and my two sons are also laborers, and we together make a living with our income,” he said.
