NELLI (Pajhwok): A woman from the Khadir district of central Daikundi province complains of improper behaviour of her addicted sons.
She says the number of drug addicts has recently surged in the district. Families are tired of the bad behavior of their addicted members.
Hawa Gul, mother of Murtaza and Mustafa, says one of her sons has been addicted for 20 years. Her second son slipped into addiction six years back.
The addicts have been bothering the remaining family members. Their mother links her sons’ addiction to poverty and unemployment.
She adds her daughters-in-law often leave home, because their addicted husbands thrashed and physically tortured them.
“They ask their wives for money to buy drugs, little realising that they have been struggling for survival,” she grumbles.
Hawa wants the government to combat narcotics and facilitate the rehabilitation of drug addicts on priority.
In addition to dealing with hijab-related issues, the authorities should maje efforts to control violence against women as well, she suggests.
Counter-Narcotics Durector Maulvi Mohammad Hashim told Pajhwok Afghan News security forces were present everywhere in the provicne and efforts were being made to curb drug trafficking.
He asked affected families to formally regitere complaints with the authorities concerned against the behaviour of addicted members.
Public Health Director Maulvi Qasim Enqyad said two drug rehabilitation centres existed in Daikundi.
However, he explained, the facilities had been non-functional due to financial crisis for the past one year.
Funds have not been earmarked for the revival of the rehabilitation facilities so far. The official, however, promised efforts to revive them soon.
