HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Two people were killed and several others were injured after unknown gunmen attacked a security forces’ vehicle in western Herat province on Monday, officials said.
The vehicle attacked belonged to the 207 Al-Farooq Military Corps for the western zone, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
"This morning, several gunmen attacked a coaster-type vehicle carrying Al-Farooq corps personnel, which resulted in the martyrdom of two people and the wounding of several others," the statement said.
Soon after the attack, additional forces reached the scene and eliminated the attackers, the statement added.
Meanwhile, Herat police spokesman Mahmood Shah Rasuli said unidentified gunmen attacked a vehicle belonging to the Al-Farooq Corps in the limits of Herat's 4th District this morning.
He said civilian and military officials escaped unhurt in the attack that left one assailant dead.
However, a family member of the victims told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity that the attack took place in the Payen Aab area, leaving three people dead and 20 others injured.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
