PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan’s ex-president Gen. Pervez Musharraf died on Sunday of a rare ailment called amyloidosis at a hospital in Dubai. He was 79.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced Musharraf’s demise. “May Allah bless the departed soul and give strength to bereaved family,” a statement from the military said.
In 2018, the Musharraf-led political party -- All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) -- announced the erstwhile dictator was suffering from amyloidosis.
On March 30, 2014, a Pakistan court indicted Musharraf for suspending the Constitution on November 3, 2007. A special court sentenced him to death in a high treason case on December 17, 2019.
Born on August 11, 1943, in New Delhi, he got commission at the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul on April 19, 1961 before joining the special services group.
On October 12, 1999, he ousted the government of ex-premier Nawaz Sharif in a coup d’état. Living in Dubai since March 2016, he was the longest-serving president of Pakistan.
