TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Environment experts and residents of northern Takhar province are concerned about the lowering underground water level in the province.

Hujatullah, an expert in environmental affairs, said due to unprecedented cold weather last winter, the underground water in the province dropped from one to three meters, creating problems for the people.

He added the problem would solve in June when water warms up. According to him, most people lack access to urban water due to drying up of semi-deep wells, urging the authorities to solve this problem.

Eng. Aminullah, another expert, says: “Wells usually go dry every year in winter, but the sub-zero cold last winter has caused the underground water in this province to plummet further, and now people are facing problems.”

According to him, this problem will be solved when the air warms up and the water level rises.

Abdullah, a civil society activist in Takhar, says: “One day we have water while another day we don’t have it, semi-deep wells have mostly dried up, sometimes we don’t even find water for ablution; This winter was very cold, it may be the reason the underground water receded and made people face problems and lack of drinking water.”

Meanwhile, Haqyar, head of the water supply department in Takhar, blamed the plummeting underground water level on increasing population and recent droughts and assured that the water supply services in eight districts of Taloqan city would continue 24 hours a day.
