KABUL (Pajhwok): Scores of people have lost their lives in a stampeded at a charity event in the capital of Yemen, Al Jazeera reported on Thursday.
The tragedy occurred in the Bab al-Yemen district of Sanaa on Wednesday when hundreds streamed to a school in quest of getting cash aid,
Security personnel struggled to control the crowd, with TV footage showing bloodstains, shoes and victims’ clothing scattered on the ground.
Interior Ministry spokesman Brig Abdel-Khaleq al-Aghri, calling the crush tragic, alleged the Ramadan aid was distributed without coordination with local officials.
The ministry said two of the event organisers had been arrested and a probe was ongoing. At least 78 people were killed and 322 more got wounded, more than a dozen critically.
