HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Some residents in western Herat province have complained against traffic congestion and asked relevant officials to resolve the problem.
They said the number of stallers and vendors who have hand-carts were growing each day on Herat City roads. In addition, the violation of traffic rules and disorder in the City further aggravated the situation.
Herat City Resident Sameer Ahmad Mardan told Pajhwok Afghan News inactive traffic signs and massive violation of traffic rules by Rakshaw drivers deteriorated the traffic condition in the city.
Umar Zaland another dweller said that on the eve of Eid more people throng to the city for shopping and this added to traffic congestion.
Herat Traffic Department Director Zabihullah Akbari said the growing number of Rickshaws, lack of proper and standard parking for vehicles, narrowness of the roads and lack of traffic signs and lights in squares and crossing points were some of the problems of traffic situation in Herat.
He asked drivers and the people of Herat to compliance with traffic rules in order to reduce the current congestion.
Herat Municipality Spokesperson Nasir Armal said that in the near future the traffic lights issue will be resolved and the municipality officials daily visited markets to ensure order in the city.
According to traffic officials currently around 300,000 vehicles, including 85,000 Rickshaws, moves in the city daily.
As a result of the violation of traffic rules and congestions 909 traffic accidents happened in Herat from the past three years.
