ATLANTA (Pajhwok): The United States and European Union (EU) have called on the caretaker government to investigate the schoolgirls’ poisoning incident in northern Sar-i-Pul province.

On Sunday, security sources in Sar-i-Pul said that around 60 female students were poisoned in a school in Sancharak district of the province.

Din Mohammad Nazari, Sar-i-Pul police spokesman, told Pajhwok that a number of unknown people entered a girls’ secondary school in Ab Kalan village of Sancharak district, sprayed poisonous gas in the classrooms and that morning about 60 students fainted.

US special representative Thomas West tweeted: “Deeply concerned by reports that scores of schoolgirls may have been poisoned in Afghanistan’s Sar-e Pul province. Urge every measure be taken to investigate and keep children safe! Afghans deserve education without fear or restrictions.”

On the other hand, Rina Amiri, the US envoy for Afghan women, girls and human rights also expressed her concern about the poisoning incident in Sar-i-Pul.

In her twitter handle, Amiri wrote: “Disturbed by reports that nearly 80 young girls were targeted & poisoned at their schools. Every measure must be taken to ensure the safety of all children. We must continue advocating for all Afghans, including women & girls, to access education without restrictions & fear.”

Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs & Security Policy of the EU Nabila Massrali also tweeted: “Afghanistan:  EU regrets horrible news of poisonings of more than 60 girls at their school. This heinous crime needs to be followed up by the de facto authorities. Right to #education is a human right of all children. Schools need to be #safe places.”
