GARDEZ (Pajhwok): A number of small water dams are being constructed at a cost of 1$ million in southeastern Paktia province in order to deal with increasing drought and store rainwater.
The check dams are being constructed in Gardez, Zurmat, Syed Karam and Ahmadaba districts.
Maulvi Abdul Raoof Syed, director of agriculture, irrigation and livestock, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “The dams’ project is funded by the Norwegian Committee and provides employment to around 9,000 people.”
Syed said the check dams would help prevent flooding and also increase underground water level.
Arifullah, a resident of Zurmat district, said they were pleased with the project and urged the government to implement more such projects.
