KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Ministry of Border and Tribal Affairs (MoBTA) officials say over 430 feuds have been resolved by tribal councils across the country in the past two years.

Border and Tribal Affairs Minister Mullah Noorullah Noori visited northern Kunduz province on Sep 19, met some residents listened to their problems.

Noori said at a meeting with locals 130 major and 300 minor disputes between tribes and families had been settled through peace councils since the Islamic Emirate’s takeover

Noori underlined the imperative of ending feuds through tribal jirgas. He said efforts were underway to further accelerate the process.

The elders, who participated in the meeting, insisted on the settlement of such feuds through tribal councils.

Agha Mir Nasiri, a tribal elder, thinks resolving conflicts between individuals, families and tribes is the most viable way to eliminate violence. He desired greater support from the government in this regard.

Nasiri added: “Al Hamdulillah (thank God) tribal councils have played an effective role in resolving conflicts and banishing violence from society.

He urged the government to lend more cooperation to tribal elders and influential figures in restoring peace and reconciliation across the country.”

Some other residents of Kunduz also stressed the need for speeding up the process to end enmities and differences among the people through jirgas.

Tribal jirgas, an effective way to resolve disputes and conflicts in Afghanistan, have sprung back into action after the fall of the previous government.

The reconciliation councils, which have a long history of ending feuds, have received a warm welcome from the people, including parties to disputes.
