TALOQAN (Pajhwok): The municipality of northern Takhar province has launched a three-day campaign to eliminate stray dogs after multiple rabid dogs’ bites incidents

Doctor Sultan Mahmood, the head of Environment Protection Authority, told Pajhwok Afghan News after e growing concerns about increased cases of rabid dog bites, local elders proposed to collect stray dogs from the city.

Five to six people are bitten by stray dogs every day and the victims visit health centers to get jabbed against rabies, The municipality along with some other relevant authorities have launched a campaign to kill stray dogs by poisoning them.

Hayatullah Safari, municipality spokesman, confirmed a three day anti rabid dogs’ campaign was in progress and so far over 300 dogs had been eliminated.

Some residents of Taloqan city welcomed the campaign and complained about high number of stray dogs in the streets of Taloqan.

Abdul Ahad, a resident of Taloqan, said the presence of high number of stray dogs in the streets had annoyed residents, he said it was not possible to come out from home after evening to go mosque.

He welcomed the campaign and suggested such campaigns must be implemented in remote areas of the province.

Asadullah Timori, another resident, said eliminating stray dogs is not the final solution, suggesting the government must collect stray dogs and keep them in a special place.

Timori said in some cases people used to harass such animals and if a specific place to keep the animals was arranged, both people and the animals would be safe.
