JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Twenty-seven individuals have been arrested in connection with hashish and opium smuggling in the Dur Baba district of eastern Nangarhar province.
The detainees wanted to smuggle the drugs to Pakistan, said the spokesman for 201<sup>st</sup> Khalid bin Walid Military Corps in the eastern zone.
Wahidullah Mohammadi told Pajhwok Afghan News border forces detained the 27 alleged drug smugglers in the Landa Khwala area of the district.
Mohammadi said the detainees had confessed to their crime after being referred to judicial organs.
Abdul Qayyum, a resident of Dur Baba, said the people of the six eastern districts were poor and youth choose this path due to poverty.
He added young people smuggled the contraband for traders taking advantage of night and in exchange for little money. Most of the time, they are arrested by security forces.
