KABUL (Pajhwok): Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar on Wednesday left Kabul for northern Balkh province to inaugurate the first phase of the Qush Tepa canal.

The canal, 280 kilometres long and 100 metres wide, is designed to irrigate 500,000 hectares of land in Balkh, Jawzjan and Faryab provinces.

Work on the first phase of the canal had been completed eight months before the scheduled date, a statement from Arg said.

The first phase of the canal is 108 kilometres, beginning from the Kaldar district of Balkh near the Amu river, passes through the plains of Hairatan and flows into Dawladabad district.

Heading a delegation, Mullah Baradar travelled to Balkh to attend the inaugural ceremony for the first phase of the mega project.

The 60 billion afs project is being executed by the Afghanistan National Development Company. All funds for the project are being provided from the national exchequer.
