Badghis residents say aid be distributed against work, not free

QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): Some residents of Badghis province appreciate the continued humanitarian aid distribution, but they the aid should be provided in exchange for work.

They say over the past two decades, huge amounts of aid and assistance flowed into Afghanistan provided by aid organizations and different countries, but the bulk of the aid fell into the hands of corrupt officials.

Badghis residents say now the aid should be provided to people in exchange for work.

Abdul Razzaq, a resident of Badghis, told Pajhwok Afghan News it was commendable Afghanistan continued to receive international humanitarian aid after the fall of the previous government.

He said: “This aid should not be free because free aid will weaken people’s will to work and earn and it also paves the way for corruption”.

“The people of Afghanistan have suffered a lot and free distribution of aid will make them suffer more because they become effortless and unwilling to work,” he added.

Ismatullah, another resident of Qala-i-Naw city, criticized the free distribution of aid and said: “The fact that aid from the international community is given free is worrying because this way people turn greedy.”

He expressed satisfaction with the continuation of aid from the international community after the fall of the political system, but emphasized that the aid should not be free and should be distributed in exchange for work.

Meanwhile, Safiullah Safa Afzali, a professor at Badghis University, told Pajhwok that free aid made people unwilling to work.

He warned free aid would seriously affect the country’s economy and turn its beneficiaries lazy.

However, government officials in Badghis say the caretaker government has always tried to implement infrastructure projects and distribute aid in exchange for work.

Mutiullah Motaghi, head of information and culture of Badghis, told Pajhwok that most of the aid was distributed in districts in exchange for work.

He added aid was distributed free only to people who were unable to work or were homeless.
