KABUL (Pajhwok): Three Afghan cricketers have been purchased by different franchises for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
These Afghan players who have found their way to IPL are Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Rahman and all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai.
The IPL auction took place in Dubai at the Coca-Cola Arena on December 19. Emerging talent Omarzai adds a fresh dimension to the roster of Afghan players.
Azmatullah Omarzai (Base price INR 50 lakh) sold to Gujarat Titans for INR 50 lakh (USD 60,000 approx).
Mohammad Nabi (Base price INR 1.5 crore) sold to Mumbai Indians for INR 1.5 crore (USD 181,000 approx).
Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Base price INR 2 crore) sold to KKR for INR 2 crore (USD 241,000 apprimately).
IPL has already witnessed the capabilities of Afghan cricketers. However, the latest addition, Omarzai, showcased his exceptional skills in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Omarzai’s performance not only caught the attention of fans but also affirmed Afghanistan’s cricket on the global stage.
Last month, five Afghan players were retained by their previous franchises for the upcoming edition of IPL.
Afghan spin master Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad have been retained by Gujarat Titans, pacer Naveen-ul-Haq by Lucknow Super Giants, Fazalhaq Farooqi by Sunrisers Hyderabad and wicket-keeper batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz by Kolkata Knight Riders.
