GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Three check dams have been executed at a cost of nearly seven million afghanis in the Andar district and Ghazni City, an official said on Tuesday.
Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Director Maulvi Idrees Hanif told Pajhwok Afghan News the dams had been constructed with financial support from the Norwegian Afghanistan Committee (NAC).
Each check dam has the capacity to store 11,000 cubic metres of water, according to the official.
Floodwater would be stored in these check dams, which will also irrigate hundreds of acres of agricultural land.
The dams would also increase the underground water level, he said, adding the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was committed to water management.
Currently, one check dam is being constructed by the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW) in each district of the southern province.
Dozens of check dams had been constructed for water management by the IEA and partner organisations in the province, the official concluded.
