KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan’s interim government on Tuesday welcomed the UN Security Council’s resolution seeking an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) supported calls from Palestinians for a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of occupation forces, humanitarian aid, the return of displaced people to their homes and the reconstruction of Gaza.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) urged the Security Council to ensure enforcement of the truce in Gaza and end the ongoing crisis there.
It asked the world body and influential countries to take practical steps to prevent “genocide” against Palestinians and find a fair solution to the issue.
A day earlier, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2728, stressing an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan and the release of all hostages.
Also on Monday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken opposed a major ground offensive in Rafah in a meeting with Israel’s defence minister.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement, cited by AFP, Blinken renewed the Biden administration’s “opposition to a major ground operation in Rafah.”
