Nangarhar tribes end 50 years of enmity

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Two tribes have reconciled, ending 50 years of enmity in the Achin district of eastern Nangarhar province.

Local officials said the feud surfaced 50 years ago between Shaikh Malakhel and Afridi tribes over land ownership in the district.

Following mediation by the Tribal Affairs Department, religious scholars and elders, this enmity has turned into friendship.

Mullah Ibrahim Khairullah, the district’s administrative chief, told the reconciliation gathering hostilities between the tribes surfaced five decades back.

Khairullah asked both sides to prevent youth getting involved in enmity in the future.

The tribespeople hugged each others, promising to live peacefully from now on.

Haji Mohammad Wali, a Shaikh Malakhel tribe elder, said: “Our enmity had been triggered by a very small  issue – a piece of land whose ownership was claimed by both sides.”

He thanked tribal elders, religious scholars, the district governor and IEA officials for ending their enmity,.

Elders and religious scholars said: “We tried untiringly and sincerely to resolve the enmity and endclashes through discussions”.

Tribal elders, religious scholars and government officials have ended hundreds of enmities in the province in the past three years, acknowledged Malik Anwar Khan, a tribal elder.
