SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): To prevent the karakul sheep from extinction in the country, the government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) wants to create a farm and raise the breed in northern Jawzjan province, an official said on Monday.
The official also announced a plan to construct a check dam and a slaughter house in Jawzjan.
During his visit to Jawzjan, acting Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Minister Maulvi Ataullah Omari held discussions with local officials about construction of a check dam to bring under irrigation vast deserts in the province.
Neighboring countries used most of Afghanistan’s water in the absence of a comprehensive plan to manage water, Omari added.
According to Omari, a slaughter house would be built this year to provide healthy meat to the people of Jawzjan.
Referring to the endangered Karakul sheep, Omari said: “This breed is about to extinct in the country, so we need to raise funds for the creation of a farm of Karakul sheep.”
The government also plans to produce modified seeds and regenerate other animal species, he explained.
Jawzjan governor Qari Gul Haidar Shafaq said IEA officials’ trips to Jawzjan showed their commitment to the people of the province.
