HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Western Herat province has become self-sufficient in producing eggs with the increased number of poultry farms, the Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock says.
Fahim Fayez, in charge of fish, birds and insects’ section at the agriculture department, told media that more than 60 poultry farms existed in the province, which had achieved self-sufficiency in egg production.
Every day, he said, these farms collectively produced more than one million eggs per day. Tthe eggs were not only supplied to the markets in Herat, but also exported to other provinces such as Kabul, Ghazni, Farah, Badghis, Ghor and Helmand.
On the other hand, a number of poultry farm owners say egg sales usually increase in winter and they are happy with their business in summer as well.
Speaking to Pajhwok, Mohammad Halim, one of the poultry farmers, said his farm produced two thousands eggs every day and he was satisfied with the market condition.
On the other hand, residents of Herat city say they are satisfied with the decrease in egg prices in the province, declaring the current prices reasonable.
According to them, previously they used to buy one imported egg for 10 afghanis, but now they purchased locally produced eggs for 7 to 8 afghanis.
However, previously eggs to Herat were prevented from Iran. The government has now banned the import of eggs and poultry meat in order to support domestic production.
