113 dead in Myanmar floods, mudslides

KABUL (Pajhwok): Floods and mudslides, triggered by Typhoon Yagi, have claimed more than 100 lives in Myanmar, a media report said on Monday.

At least 113 people were confirmed dead and 64 others missing by ruling junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun in a statement on Sunday.

But citing regional reports, the BBC hinted at a higher death toll from the flooding and mudslides, which forced the evacuation of over 320,000 people to temporary shelters.

According to AFP news agency, Typhoon Yagi has already swept across Vietnam, Laos, the Chinese island of Hainan and the Philippines.

The typhoon, Asia’s most powerful storm this year, left 287 people dead before it lashed Myanmar.

About 66,000 houses had been destroyed as of Friday evening, along with 375 schools and a monastery, in Myanmar.

Kayah, Kayin, Mandalay, Mon and Shan in central Myanmar are the worst-hit states.

Since a military junta seized power in 2021, Myanmar has suffered a civil war, which has reportedly killed thousands and displaced 2.6 million people.
