KABUL (Pajhwok): In the wake of his last week’s fruitless attempt to declare martial law, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office in Seoul has been raided by police.
Amid impeachment moves and growing calls for him to resign, Yeol was facing investigations on charges of insurrection and treason, the BBC reported on Wednesday.
In a related development, South Korea’s former defence minister Kim Yong-hyun who took responsibility for the martial law declaration, tried overnight to take his life in detention.
The ruling party boycotted a vote to impeach Yoon after he agreed to cut short his tenure and avoid involvement in foreign and domestic affairs.
But the opposition Democratic Party, enjoying a majority in the parliament, slammed the deal as “an illegal, unconstitutional second insurrection and a second coup”.
On Wednesday, 18 investigators were sent to the presidential office to confiscate records related to a cabinet meeting held on the eve of the martial law declaration.
The embattled president, who was among the suspects listed on the search warrant, was not in his office when the raids were conducted.
