Death toll from South Korean plane crash rises to 179

KABUL (Pajhwok): The death toll from the disastrous South Korean Jeju Air plane crash has risen to 179, media reports said on Sunday.

The Guardian reported the Boeing 737-800 Jeju Air plane skidded off the runway and crashed into a wall at the Muan International Airport.

All 179 on board barring crew members were killed in the incident, which took place after the plane arrived at 9:00am from Thailand.

At least 175 passengers and six crew members were aboard the aircraft, which veered of the runway and crashed into a wall before being engulfed by flames.

According to officials, most of the victims died due to the fire. The cause of the incident remains unclear but some media reports suggest a bird strike may have disrupted the plane's landing.

Before this, an Azerbaijani passenger airplane crashed in the Aktau city of Kazakhstan, killing 38 of the 67 individuals on board.
