Laghman families bury hatchet after 13 years

MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): A 13-year-long feud between two families in eastern Laghman province has ended through the mediation of local officials, tribal elders and religious scholars.

The conflict, which took place in the Alishang district and resulted in casualties on both sides, came to an end on Friday.

According to a statement from the Laghman governor’s office, the feud began 13 years ago between the families of Haji Janat Gul and Mullah Noorkhail in the Shakai village of Alishang.

Over the course of the feud, nine people from both families were killed and three others injured, the statement said.

The reconciliation was achieved through the efforts of local authorities, tribal elders and religious scholars.

Speaking at a gathering held to mark the reconciliation, Alishang district chief Abdul Qaher Mutawakil said: “We have turned hundreds of feuds into friendships across various districts of Laghman. We consider this a form of worship and are always striving to free our people from the fear of conflict so they can live in an atmosphere of peace, security, and happiness.”

Other participants at the gathering — including tribal elders and religious scholars — also welcomed the reconciliation and described the resolution of such disputes as an important and valuable step toward unity, peace and prosperity.
