PARAKH (Pajhwok): Authorities in central Panjshir province have launched a programme to issue licences for the extraction of 17 types of precious and semi-precious stones.
The governor’s office stated that the initiative is part of broader economic strategies aimed at fostering both local and national economic growth. The licensing process for gemstone extraction has now formally begun.
The minerals included in the programme are ruby, beryl, aquamarine, green garnet, ametrine, crystal, citrine, aventurine, prasiolite, hawk’s eye quartz, chalcedony, agate, tourmaline, microcline, moonstone, and several others.
According to the statement, deposits of these stones have been identified across multiple districts, including Anaba, Rokha, Abshar, Dara, Hesa-i-Awal, Paryan, and Bazarak. Practical extraction activities are expected to commence once the licensing process is completed.
The statement further noted that these mining sites were surveyed and verified last year by a team of specialists from the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, in coordination with the Panjshir Department of Mines and Petroleum. The survey covered both the provincial capital and the aforementioned districts.
Officials from the Department of Mines and Petroleum reported strong interest among local residents—particularly traders and young people—in investing in and developing these mineral resources.
Since the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, mining activities in Panjshir—especially emerald extraction—have expanded steadily.
