$10.2m salt mining contract signed in Herat

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) says a contract for the extraction of the third block of a salt mine in the Ghurian district of western Herat province has been signed, with a total investment of $10.2 million.

MoMP spokesman Homayoon Afghan said in a post on X that Deputy Minister for Policy and Programs Mawlawi Abdul Rahman Qanit signed the agreement on Tuesday with the company “Obaid Ayoub Noori Limited.”

According to the statement, Qanit said the mining contract has been awarded at a royalty rate of 1,500 afghanis per tonne for a period of 15 years, on the condition that the company operates in line with the law, mining regulations and its commitments.

The statement added that, in addition to paying royalties, the company is also obliged to fulfill commitments in social services and environmental protection. The project is expected to create jobs for around 125 people.
