Heavy rain, flash floods forecast in several provinces

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) has forecast heavy rainfall and flash floods in some parts of the country.

In a post on X, the ministry said heavy rain and flash floods are expected from May 3 to 4 in areas of the northern, Kabul and Panj Amu river basins, as well as some adjoining catchment areas.

The statement added that there is a risk of flooding or rising water levels in rivers flowing through Faryab, Sar-e-Pul, Balkh, Samangan, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Kabul, Panjshir, Kapisa, Parwan, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Nuristan, Badakhshan, Takhar, Kunduz and Baghlan provinces, as well as nearby tributaries.

The ministry urged residents in the affected areas to avoid going near rivers during flooding or high water levels, and to alert people living downstream in order to prevent possible casualties.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) also warned on its X page of heavy rain, thunderstorms and flash floods in Badakhshan, Takhar, Kunduz, Baghlan, Samangan, Parwan, Panjshir, Nuristan, Kunar, Nangarhar and Logar provinces.

It said rainfall is expected to range between 10 and 30 millimetres in different parts of these provinces.

It also forecast wind speeds of 50 to 85 kilometres per hour in central and southeastern provinces.
