KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Wednesday it had launched attacks against US military facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, describing the operations as retaliation for recent US strikes on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to a statement carried by Iranian state media and cited by Al Jazeera on Wednesday, the IRGC said it launched drone attacks targeting the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, while also carrying out a long-range missile strike on an airbase in Azraq, Jordan.
The IRGC claimed it targeted 21 US military sites and destroyed four of them, including an F-35 fighter jet hangar at the Jordanian base. It also said its forces shot down a US MQ-9 drone over the Iranian city of Jam.
The escalation follows US military strikes on Qeshm Island and several ports along Iran’s coast in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington launched the attacks after accusing Iran of downing a US Apache helicopter earlier on Tuesday.
The IRGC said the US strikes damaged a telecommunications tower in the town of Sirik and destroyed two water storage tanks.
In its statement, the IRGC warned that its forces remain fully prepared to deliver what it described as a “crushing and decisive” response to any further US military action, adding that Washington would bear full responsibility for the consequences of any additional escalation.
