KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan wushu athletes Mohammad Khalid Hotak and Shahzada Safi have secured bronze medals at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Wushu Championships.
The two Afghan athletes are scheduled to compete tomorrow (Sunday) for silver medals against opponents from Iran and Hong Kong.
In a post on X handle, the General Directorate of the Olympic, Physical Education and Sports said that Mohammad Khalid Hotak, competing in the 70kg category, secured a bronze medal in the event.
Atal Mashwani, spokesman for the directorate, told Pajhwok that Hotak received a bye in the first round due to his high ranking and his bronze medal was confirmed after the withdrawal of one competitor.
According to the directorate, he is scheduled to face Iranian athlete Erfan Mohammadi on Sunday in a bid to reach the final and compete for the silver medal.
The statement added that Shahzada Safi won a bronze medal in the 56kg category after defeating his Kazakh opponent in the same tournament.
It said Safi will also compete on Sunday against an athlete from Hong Kong for a chance to advance to the silver medal match.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Wushu Championships began on 26 June in China with athletes from 18 countries and will continue until 29 June.
Afghanistan is represented by six athletes in the competition.
