KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 17 people have been killed, more than 300 others wounded and tens of thousands displaced after tornadoes and severe storms swept through central and southern China, media reports said on Wednesday.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) and The Associated Press (AP), citing Chinese state media, reported that torrential rain and storm-triggered flooding in Guangxi had killed at least six people and forced more than 130,000 residents to evacuate their homes. Eleven people remain missing.
At least 40 rivers and waterways in Guangxi were overflowing, CCTV reported, as Guangxi have overflowed, prompting authorities to issue the highest-level flood alert (red warning).
State news agency Xinhua reported that thunderstorms and strong winds killed 11 people and injured more than 300 in the central province of Hubei, where one person remains missing. Nearly 5,000 houses were damaged, while 22 were completely destroyed.
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged emergency responders to make every effort to rescue those affected and respond to the unfolding disaster.
