KABUL (Pajhwok): On the sixth day of escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has reported new strikes on several targets in Iran, while Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and military said they carried out retaliatory attacks on US bases in the region using drones and missiles.

Over the past five days, the US has conducted multiple strikes against targets in Iran, while Tehran has responded by targeting American military positions across the region.

CENTCOM announced in a statement on X at 11:18pm Afghanistan time on Wednesday that it had launched another round of strikes against Iran.

In a follow-up statement issued at 6:16am Thursday, CENTCOM claimed that its latest major wave of attacks had targeted dozens of military sites, including coastal surveillance facilities, air defence systems, military logistics infrastructure, and Iranian naval capabilities.

The command said the operations were aimed at further degrading Iran’s military capabilities and holding Tehran accountable for recent attacks on commercial vessels.

“More than 50,000 US military personnel are operating across the Middle East and remain vigilant, lethal, and ready,” CENTCOM said.

Meanwhile, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported that US forces had targeted civilian infrastructure in Iran, claiming that a bridge and railway facilities in Hormozgan province were hit on Thursday morning.

According to the report, at least three people were killed after a strike hit the “Kahurstan” bridge on the route to Bandar Khamir. The provincial authorities confirmed the incident.

The report also stated that the Bandar Abbas railway junction was targeted early Thursday.

Separately, the IRGC announced what it described as a “surprise attack” on a US Special Operations Command centre in the Al-Tanf area of Syria.

The IRGC claimed that the attack destroyed a radar system and several special operations helicopters.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency also released footage claiming that Iranian military drones had targeted US military support facilities in Kuwait.

The latest developments come despite Iran and the United States previously being under a ceasefire arrangement based on the “Islamabad Understanding.”
