KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 25 people have been killed in floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains across northern and northeastern India, officials said.
Reuters reported that at least 15 people were killed in rain-related incidents in Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts of Indian-administered Kashmir, while several others remained missing.
In northeastern Nagaland state, landslides caused by persistent rainfall killed nine people, with rescue teams recovering four bodies, a senior district official told Reuters.
In neighbouring Assam, one person died in floods on Sunday, while more than 57,000 people across seven districts have been affected by heavy rains, according to the state disaster management authority.
India’s weather department said active monsoon conditions were likely to continue across northwest, east and northeast India over the next six to seven days.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Nepal, 27 people have been killed, one remains missing and 69 others injured in floods, landslides, heavy rains and lightning strikes since the monsoon season began in mid-June.
Police said several highways, including the route connecting Kathmandu with the southern plains, have been blocked by landslide debris.
Nepal’s weather department forecast light to moderate rainfall across much of the country on Monday, with heavy rains expected in some areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.
