KABUL (Pajhwok): At least nine people have been killed and 22 others wounded after Russia launched ballistic missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, a media report said on Saturday.
The Associated Press, citing Ukrainian officials, reported that debris from a missile struck a five-storey residential building in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district, causing significant damage and sparking a fire.
It said emergency workers rescued 35 people from the upper floors of the building, but two people lost their lives and eight others, including two children, were injured.
Ukrainian officials said Russian strikes in the Darnytskyi district also triggered fires and damaged homes, vehicles and administrative and non-residential buildings, leaving seven people dead and 14 others wounded.
The report added firefighters brought a blaze at a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district under control, while authorities provided no further details about initial reports that people had been trapped inside another building.
The attack came just two days after widespread Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine reportedly killed at least 10 civilians, wounded more than 50 others and saw a Russian missile enter Polish airspace.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again urged the United States and its Western allies to provide Kyiv with more Patriot air defence systems to help counter Russian missile attacks.
Zelensky also said he had spoken with US Vice President JD Vance on Friday evening and discussed his recent meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington, describing the talks as “positive and constructive.”
