HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Two safe drinking water supply networks have been completed and inaugurated at a cost of 9.719 million afghanis in Adraskan district of western Herat province, an official said on Saturday.
Rural Rehabilitation and Development Director Mawlawi Abdul Salam Mustawfi Agha said construction of the two water supply networks began about eight months ago with financial support from the World Bank, under the supervision of his department’s technical team and with the cooperation of the Danish Committee for Aid to Afghan Refugees (DACAAR).
Following their completion, the networks were handed over to residents of the villages at a ceremony, he said.
He added that the two networks include the drilling of two water wells to depths of 80 and 120 metres, the construction of two reservoirs with a combined capacity of 80 cubic metres, the installation of 200 taps and the laying of 12,560 metres of water pipes.
According to him, a total of 32 solar panels have also been installed to provide the energy required to operate the networks.
He explained that the implementation of the projects provided employment opportunities for dozens of local residents. With the completion and inauguration of the two water supply networks, 393 families in the villages of Zalmabad and Humays Nasr have gained access to safe drinking water.
He described the inauguration of the networks as an effective step towards improving local residents’ access to safe drinking water, saying that the implementation of such projects could help meet some of the basic needs of people in remote areas.
