KABUL (Pajhwok): More than one million people have been evacuated from their homes in eastern China, including Shanghai, as Typhoon Dolphin made landfall in the region.
The typhoon brought winds of up to 150km/h (94mph) when it struck Yuhuan in Zhejiang province before making a second landfall in Wenzhou about an hour later, according to meteorological authorities.
According to the BBC report, the storm disrupted transportation across the region, with 1,400 flights cancelled in Shanghai alone.
Chinese authorities had earlier issued their highest-level red alert for the typhoon but downgraded it to a tropical storm by Monday morning.
The storm is moving inland, with authorities warning of torrential rain, flooding and landslides through Wednesday. Heavy rain was forecast in several provinces, including Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui and Shanghai.
Local governments have urged residents to avoid outdoor activities, while several tourist attractions, including parts of Disneyland and Legoland, remain closed.
State media reported that a nine-year-old boy from Wenling in Zhejiang was missing after being swept into the sea. No casualties have been officially reported.
Authorities in Wenzhou have relocated around 900,000 residents and opened more than 1,000 emergency shelters, while about 390,000 people have been evacuated in Taizhou.
According to China’s state broadcaster CCTV, the storm travelled about 6,000km before landfall and had a lifespan more than three times that of an average typhoon. It also reported that the storm had a large circulation area and intense rainfall capacity.
