KABUL (Pajhwok): Islam Makhachev has retained his UFC welterweight title after defeating Ireland’s Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision at UFC 330 in Philadelphia, United States.
The Russian fighter won the five-round bout on all three judges’ scorecards, 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47, according to UFC results.
Makhachev relied heavily on his wrestling and grappling to control large parts of the fight, despite Garry using his height and reach advantage to land effective strikes during several exchanges.
Garry found success at range, particularly in the middle rounds, but Makhachev maintained his composure and regained control through takedowns and ground work.
The victory extended Makhachev’s UFC winning streak to 17 fights, breaking the previous record of 16 consecutive UFC victories held by Anderson Silva.
The bout was Makhachev’s first defence of the welterweight championship. He also improved his professional mixed martial arts record to 29 wins and one defeat, according to reports.
Garry, 28, showed resilience throughout the contest but was unable to overcome Makhachev’s wrestling and control in the decisive rounds.
Makhachev praised his opponent after the fight, while Garry said he would return stronger after the defeat.
The UFC 330 main event was held at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia on Saturday night.
