PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): An intensive care unit (ICU) has been established for the first time at the 300-bed Naib Aminullah Khan Hospital in central Logar province, officials said.

Hospital officials said the unit was established by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) to provide emergency care to patients from Logar, Paktia, Paktika and Khost provinces in the south-eastern zone.

Dr Faisal Ahmad Fana, director of the Naib Aminullah Khan Logari 300-bed Hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the ICU has 10 beds, with six specialist doctors providing round-the-clock monitoring and treatment to critically ill patients.

He said the unit had been equipped with advanced medical equipment and that the hospital currently provides 24-hour health services across the south-eastern zone, including internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, ICU, ambulance and blood bank services.

Dr Abdul Wasif Wahdat, an ICU specialist, said patients suffering from heart attacks, strokes, respiratory problems and other serious medical conditions were being treated and closely monitored in the unit.

He described the launch of the ICU as an important development for residents of Logar and the wider south-eastern zone, saying it would help reduce the difficulties critically ill patients face in accessing treatment.

Several Logar residents and patients also welcomed the opening of the unit, saying that, for the first time, the province has 10 dedicated ICU beds for critically ill and emergency patients.
