KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW) has begun technical studies, surveying and design work for a project to transfer water from Sayad district of central Kapisa province to Kabul.
In a statement, the ministry said a number of Islamic Emirate officials attended the ceremony marking the launch of the project.
Mullah Mohammad Younus Akhundzada, Minister of Energy and Water, said at the ceremony that, given Kabul’s water shortage, the project was vital for residents of Kabul and New Kabul.
He said the ministry was making determined efforts to manage water resources and meet the population’s water needs.
Akhundzada added that, as a result of these efforts, people would soon witness the inauguration of the Shah wa Arous Dam, the Bakhshabad Dam in Farah province, the development of the Dahla Dam and the launch of other infrastructure projects in the water and energy sectors.
Kabul Governor Mullah Aminullah Obaid said implementation of the project would significantly help address the shortage of drinking water in Kabul.
The project includes technical, social and economic studies, as well as surveying and design work for transferring water from Sayad to Kabul and New Kabul.
The ministry said the project would be completed over a period of one and a half years using a budget provided by the Islamic Emirate.
Once completed, the project will transfer 126 million cubic metres of water annually to Kabul and New Kabul, benefiting more than seven million people, according to the ministry.
