KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday directed the judiciary to investigate the cases of inmates being held at the Bagram jail, which was transferred to Afghan control a day earlier.
At a meeting with members of the Commission on the Transfer of Bagram Detention Centre, Karzai stressed a fair trial for the detainees, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.
The president lauded the panel’s efforts and congratulated it on successful transition of the notorious jail from the US military to local authorities, the statement added.
Afghan Military Police Commander Gen. Ghulam Farouk Barakzai presented the commission’s report to the president, who ordered a swift resolution of unsettled technical issue to pave the way for the prison’s complete transition.
He also asked the relevant authorities to give the prisoners their due rights and let Afghan rights activists, as well as ICRC representatives, meet inmates on a regular basis.
