JALALABAD (PAN insurgents have started a poppy-eradicating campaign in eastern Kunar province, an official said on Wednesday.
Najibullah, police chief of Chapa Dara district, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban had launched the drive in restive mountainous areas of the province.
A rebel commander, who did not want to be named, insisted they had always prevented poppy cultivation in their areas and would not let anyone grow the illicit crop.
According to another report 60 acres of poppy crop were eradicated by policemen in eastern Laghman province.
Governor’s spokesman Sarhadi Zwak said the poppy farms were destroyed during a special operation in Alishang and Dawlat Shah districts.
