KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Islamic scholars in southeastern Khost province on Thursday said women had the right to take part in the ongoing election process.

Khost Ulema council head, Maulvi Mohammad Mohammadi, said Islam is not against women’s participation in elections. Making 50 percent of the population, women reserve the right to vote for anyone they want.
The governor’s spokesman, Mubarez Mohammad Zadran, told the conference security forces had ensured protection of all polling stations in the provincial capital and districts.
He said of the 186 polling stations across Khost, only some were under security threat, but the local forces would do their best to protect all sites.
A women’s rights activist, Maryam, said few females were aware of the election process, and the public awareness programme of the IEC had been ineffective.
She asked IEC to task prayer leaders with public awareness programmes to encourage people to let their women participate in the election process.
