KABUL (Pajhwok): Leading a delegation of Republican lawmakers, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, John Boehner, has been in Kabul since Sunday to underscore their call for US forces to remain and review the April 5 presidential election, Boehner’s office said on Monday.
Boehner and seven other House Republicans met with US troops, the US ambassador and the commander of NATO during the two-day visit that began on Sunday.
Boehner’s office said the visit aimed to send “a strong, unequivocal message that the House of Representatives wants to maintain a right-sized presence in Afghanistan.”
A statement from his office said: “Now, the Afghans are poised to elect a new government for the first time in their history. We must honor the sacrifices of the Americans and Afghans to reach this point and continue our work together.”
His office linked the purpose of the trip to talk over the presence of US troop in Afghanistan and continued cooperation between the two countries.
Boehner is accompanied by house education and Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline (R-MN), Natural Resources Committee Chairman ‘Doc’ Hastings (R-WA), Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI), Rep. Tom Latham (R-IA), Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR), and Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR) on the trip.
