Najibullah Sharifi, the AJSC head, told reporters in Kabul that around 50 cases of violence against journalists had been recorded so far during the current year. Government officials were involved in 62 percent of the incidents, he alleged.
Sharifi linked the incidents to lawlessness, lamenting that the constitution contained no law ensuring the safety of journalists. He urged lawmakers to for new legislation to protect journalists.
He said the AJSC had suggested three articles to the government for protecting the lives of journalists. Inclusion of the articles in media laws was essential, the AJSC head stressed.
