EWA’s Press Statement on the Role of the UN in Afghanistan Presidential Elections Deadlock

June 22th, 2014

Following Afghanistan run-off elections of 2014, complaints and objections appeared to arise by candidates concerning accordance of widespread frauds and irregularities and partiality of some IEC and Government officials in the process resulting in one candidate suspending its entire relations with the IEC and proposal for the United Nation’s mediation in the process.

Election Watch Organization of Afghanistan embraces consideration of the role of the UN by electoral institutes, candidates and the President in seeking the ways of resolving run-off elections deadlock and appreciates the UN preparations for playing a mediation role in tackling the issue.

EWA believes that the UN is considered a credible entity with sufficient expertise that not only played a significant role in providing financial and technical assistance to electoral bodies in the first round, but also it can enhance the transparency in run- off elections and pave the ground for the acceptance of final results in this round by negotiating the candidates and providing technical assistance to electoral bodies to deal with the present deadlock.

The UN is also expected to respect the credibility and legitimacy of electoral institutions while mediating in the process and follow up with the issues in close conjunction with electoral commissions, two candidates and domestic and international elections observer organizations.

EWA calls on the electoral institutions, two candidates and the President to have a fully fledge cooperation with the UN to fulfill its oversight and technical tasks in the process.

EWA also calls on the candidates and their supporters to patiently observe the next stages of the process taking into account the mediating role of the UN and avoid any kind of actions that distract the process.
