KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 70 percent area of the capital Kabul have been occupied by unplanned and illegal means, a Ministry of Urban Development Affairs (MUDA) official said on Monday.
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Deputy Minister Akbar Ahmadi claimed rectifying urbanisation of the Kabul would take five to 10 year time.
Earlier, President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai had called for resolving the problems Kabul citizens faced on a daily basis due to unplanned constructions in the capital.
Ahmadi told PAN the planned urbanisation process would involve the daunting task of convincing the occupants of illegal and unplanned areas to cooperate.
Certain neighbourhoods including Chahar Qala, Wazirabad, Old City, Kart-i-Naw, Shah Shaheed, Dasht-i- Barchi, Chehel Satoon and Darul Aman had been developed without proper planning, he informed.
Under the new plan, all basic utilities including water supply, sewerage system, electricity and transportation would be provided in the previously unplanned areas, Ahmadi claimed.
He added the industrial areas would also be reconstructed on modern lines. According to MUDA estimates, there exist some 350 unplanned or illegal townships in the capital that would need regulation and restructuring.
