President seeks China’s role in Afghan stability

KABUL.

At a meeting with Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the visiting president also called for more robust links between parliaments of the two countries.

According to a statement from his office, Ahmadzai believed frequent exchanges between parliamentarians would enable them to learn from each other’s experiences and strengthen the cooperative Sino-Afghan relationship.

While making a pitch for enhanced cultural relations between Kabul and Beijing, the president said security of Chinese investors was a top priority for his administration.

Zhang promised the NPC, China’s top legislative body, would make joint efforts with the Wolesi Jirga.

He also called on the two countries to expand their cooperation and strengthen exchanges at various levels to promote the China-Afghanistan strategic partnership to a new high.

Afghanistan was committed to a long-term strategic partnership with China and sought to boost bilateral parliamentary exchanges in such areas as security, trade and culture, the president said.

“As the national unity government remains committed to bolstering security, Afghanistan needs a proactive role by China in this regard,” added Ahmadzai, who called stability a prerequisite for his country.
