AIHRC seeks deterrent punishment for child killers

<p class="rteleft">ZARANJ (Pajhwok): The <a href="/en/afghanistan" class="glossify-link">Afghanistan</a> Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) on Thursday sought punishment for the abductors of a child in southwestern province of Nimroz.</p>

<p class="rteleft">Zakria, 5, was abducted two weeks ago from the 1st police district of Zaranj, the provincial capital, and his dead body was later found in a government building.</p>

<p class="rteleft">AIHRC officer Waheed Khairzad told Pajhwok Afghan News any type of abduction, especially the kidnapping of the children, was against basic human rights.</p>

<p class="rteleft">“We strongly denounce the act of (keeping the child in a well) and ask the government to bring the killers to justice as soon as possible,” he said.</p>

<p class="rteleft">The abductors demanded one million afghanis in ransom, but the demand was later lowered to 400,000afs, before killing the child.</p>

<p class="rteleft">Abdul Qayyum, the victim’s grandfather, said:“I want the government to execute the killers.” Police have arrested Farid,a maternal cousin of the child, in connection with the incident.</p>

<p class="rteleft">Farid has confessedto keeping the child in a house. He said a day the boy recognised him. As a result, Farid suffocated the child and put his body in a water well for four days.</p>

<p class="rteleft">Last night, thekidnappers retrieved the body from the well and tried to bury in the yard of the government building. Police detained Farid, whose accomplice managed to flee.</p>

<p class="rteleft">Police were trying to arrest the second kidnapper, said the crime branch chief, Col. Abdul Hadi Azizi, who pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice.</p>
